I was reading a science article about the growing extinction of languages. Specifically, it was about the negative impact on medical knowledge. In fact, there are “12,495 medicinal uses for plants in indigenuous communities, new research has found over 75 percent of those plants are each tied to just one local language”(Cassella). Imagine that! If we lose these indigenuous languages, then how will scientists and health professionals learn these plants that can heal or treat us. Languages have gone extinct for a very long time, and it is a tragedy. In fact, “Roughly one language ceases to be spoken every four months, and 3,054 languages are currently endangered around the world”(Cassella). Think about this. At least 3 languages will be gone in one year. That is not good at all. This is not just environmental harm but also a harm to languages. Indigenous languages can be useful. It could help us in ways that we may never have recognized before. A new door of opportunities, but that door is closing. Time is not our friend. Let’s keep learning languages.
